Each February, Heart Health Month is celebrated nationally. It's a time to focus on heart health and raise awareness about heart disease, the leading cause of death for U.S. men and women.

There are many things you can do to celebrate Heart Health Month and improve your heart health, including:

  • Learning about heart disease.

  • Getting screened for heart disease.

  • Making healthy lifestyle changes.

  • Quitting smoking.

  • Managing stress.

Even small changes can make a big difference in your heart health. So why not make February the month you start taking care of your heart?

For optimal heart health, here are some fantastic food groups and specific foods to incorporate into your diet:

Fruits and Vegetables:

Aim for a rainbow on your plate. Berries, citrus fruits, bell peppers, leafy greens, carrots, tomatoes, and sweet potatoes are all excellent choices.

Whole Grains:

Opt for whole wheat bread, brown rice, quinoa, oats, barley, and whole-grain crackers over refined grains, such as white bread and pasta.

Healthy Fats:

Eat monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats found in avocados, olive oil, nuts (almonds, walnuts, pecans), and fatty fish (salmon, tuna, mackerel). 

Lean Protein:

Opt for fish, poultry (without skin), beans, lentils, tofu, and low-fat dairy products, such as yogurt and skim milk.
