New Crop Almond Harvest

Almond harvest is in full swing in the California Central Valley. Here at Hoover Ingredients, we are excited to see what the new crop brings. Harvest is orchestrated with a variety of machinery and logistics. Almond trees are shaken to remove the nuts from the trees. The loose nuts are then swept into windrows for collection. Almonds are then transported to be hulled, shelled and foreign material removed. Once this has been completed the almonds will move to the processor for additional cleaning, sorting, sizing, pasteurization and final packing and/or storage.

Early field reports from almond growers mention some higher levels of serious crop damage. This could be due to lack of inputs and typical orchard tasks as well as neighboring orchard abandonments creating pest havens. As the statewide harvest continues, there will be a clearer picture of overall yields and quality.
